Results of the UC Campus Climate Study

Chancellor Block addresses results of UC-wide Campus Climate Study.

To the Campus Community:

The University of California Office of the President has released results of the 2012–13 system-wide Campus Climate Study, which includes UCLA’s data. This information will be helpful as we strive to make UCLA an ever more inclusive and accepting place for all who live, work and study here. I want to thank those who took the time to participate in the unprecedented survey about your experiences.

I encourage you to review the contents of the report and to discuss them with your fellow students and colleagues. There is some good news here, along with indications that we can do more to foster a real sense of belonging and mutual respect on campus.

While the report offers us new opportunities to strengthen equity, prevent bias and foster inclusivity, many of those efforts are already well underway. As you know from my previous emails to you, I fully support the goals of many of our students, faculty and others to develop a general education requirement focused on diversity. In addition, we will conduct a national search for a vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion, and we anticipate making an appointment in the 2014–15 academic year. We also are in the process of recruiting two discrimination prevention officers who will be responsible for providing education as well as investigating allegations of bias and discrimination involving faculty.

There is much being done, but there is much still to do. As we continue our journey together, let us recommit ourselves to talking through our differences, learning to trust one another and seeing events through the eyes of others. This may not always be an easy path, but it is the one we must choose to ensure that our campus community not only respects diversity but also cherishes and celebrates it.

Sincerely,

Gene D. Block
Chancellor
