Fall On-Campus Housing Updates
Chancellor Block and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Carter sent the following message to students, administrative officers, deans, department chairs, directors, vice chancellors and vice provosts:.
Dear Students and Colleagues:
We know that, for many UCLA students, living on campus is an important part of the college experience. Our inability to open fully our residence halls and university apartments since winter 2020 has caused many students, from first-years to transfers, to miss out on the opportunity to call UCLA home. We also know that, at points throughout our fall planning, not every student saw themself as fully included in our plans to reopen UCLA housing. Please know that all of our students’ varied and diverse experiences are valued by and important to us.
With increased COVID-19 vaccinations and the easing of public health restrictions, we are pleased to report now that UCLA expects to be able to offer on-campus housing to a high percentage of those interested. We are currently planning for triple capacity rooms in on-campus housing, allowing us increased capacity to welcome foster youth, veterans, new first-year freshmen and transfer students who are seeking housing with us. We will also be able to welcome more second-year students, including second-year transfer students, than previously anticipated.
Fully opening our residential communities will require a commitment from our students. Vaccine requirements, continued adherence to specific guidelines and a staggered move-in process will allow us to more safely welcome everyone back in the fall. We will keep students updated on plans and details through the UCLA Housing website, via email and on all @UCLAHousing social media channels. As we have learned over the past year, we also need to remain flexible and be willing to adjust our expectations, in case the pandemic worsens and public health guidance again forces us to modify our plans.
We remain optimistic and hopeful, however, that a substantial return to campus will be possible. At this time, we expect to offer close to 80% of courses in-person this fall. Large lecture classes will most likely be held remotely, with corresponding discussion sections held primarily in person. Our expectation is that every student will receive at least some in-person instruction. For those unable to return to campus at this time, there will still be a number of remote courses available to support continued progress toward your degree.
Please know that the safety and well-being of our Bruin community will continue to guide every aspect of our planning for the next academic year. Your continued flexibility and care for your fellow Bruins as we move through each step of our COVID-19 recovery is essential. Returning to campus, including a vibrant and exciting move-in day for those living at UCLA, will serve as an important milestone in our emergence from this pandemic. We personally look forward to sharing these moments with all of you.
Sincerely,
