An Extraordinary University at an Extraordinary Time

Chancellor Frenk shared a campus message with the Bruin community.

Dear Bruin Community:

This morning, I had the profound honor of being formally inaugurated as UCLA’s seventh chancellor. I am deeply humbled to serve this extraordinary university and filled with immense gratitude for the warm welcome I have received.

In my inaugural address, I shared our collective vision for UCLA’s future, one inspired by everything I heard and learned during our UCLA Connects: Listening Exercise. I want to personally thank the nearly 6,000 members of our Bruin community who participated in the 38 conversations we held, and I am grateful for the more than 1,500 suggestions and questions I received on my webpage. I attended each session with open ears and an open heart.

From these thoughtful conversations and constructive suggestions emerged three aspirations to guide us moving forward. In our collective vision, we aspire to be a university that is connective, impactful and exemplary.

UCLA is a relatively young university, but we have achieved a remarkable record in just 106 years. If we measure accomplishment relative to institutional age, UCLA has to count among the highest-performing universities in the world. And that same youth means that we have much rich potential ahead of us in our second century. Preeminence and promise are the two sides of our institutional coin.

Now, we enter a new era of boldness, and we are ready to meet this moment together.

We are One UCLA.
