Chancellor’s Letter to the Academic Senate: November 19, 2025

Megan McEvoy

Chair, UCLA Academic Senate

Dear Chair McEvoy,

Thank you for forwarding the Berkeley Divisional Council’s statement regarding the release of individualized incident data, and for the UCLA Academic Senate Executive Board’s thoughtful endorsement of its principles.

We share the Council’s concern for protecting privacy, procedural fairness, and academic freedom—values that are fundamental to UCLA’s mission of open inquiry and scholarly excellence. We agree that any release of individualized information should be approached with the utmost care, transparency, and in full compliance with applicable laws and University policies.

We also affirm the importance of faculty consultation when decisions bear on classroom speech or instructional matters. Protecting the integrity of academic discourse while maintaining compliance with federal and state obligations remains a central priority for our administration.

We will continue to work closely with the Academic Senate, the Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and the UC Office of the President to ensure that UCLA’s policies and practices reflect these shared commitments.

Thank you again for your engagement and for reaffirming the collaborative governance that strengthens our University community.

Sincerely,

Julio Frenk
Chancellor
