Attendees at the chancellor’s Listening Exercise for the Herb Alpert School of Music on March 11, 2025 engaged in a lively discussion centered around several key themes.

The potential impact of reduced funding for research institutions, particularly in areas like the natural sciences, engineering, and health, was a topic of discussion.

One speaker highlighted the importance of these areas for the overall health of the university and expressed worry about the implications of reductions in funding. Other speakers focused on the vital role of music education and the need to elevate the profile of the Herb Alpert School of Music on a local, national and global stage. One speaker passionately advocated for the school’s unique offerings and the exceptional talent of its students and faculty.

Speakers also discussed the school’s commitment to diversity and outreach, and asked about the chancellor’s views on inclusivity and the school’s mission of diversity. The importance of adequate funding for arts education, staff support, and facilities was also emphasized, particularly in the context of the school’s relatively recent founding and limited capital reserves. One speaker asked about the chancellor’s vision for the Herb Alpert School of Music within UCLA’s strategic plan, emphasizing its unique position as the only university music school in the UC system.
