Office of Research & Creative Activities & Institute of American Cultures Listening Exercise


Attendees at the chancellor’s Listening Exercise with the Office of Research and Creative Activities and the Institute of American Cultures on May 9, 2025 expressed concerns about the impact of federal budget cuts on research funding at UCLA.

A speaker asked about alternative sources of funding to address potential federal funding shortfalls. Another speaker voiced concerns about the future of research in light of these ongoing cuts to funding. Other speakers highlighted the need for UCLA to take a public stance in support of academic freedom and resist what they perceive as federal overreach. One speaker emphasized the importance of outreach to Republican members of Congress and other elected officials, as well as engaging with those who may not traditionally support higher education.

Throughout the event, audience members emphasized the need for UCLA to navigate a challenging political climate and advocate for its vital role in research and education.

  • Federal Funding Concerns: There was significant discussion about the impact of potential federal cuts on UCLA’s research and operations budgets. A speaker asked about alternative sources of funding and revenue. 
  • Federal Policy Changes: Discussion focused on the federal government’s increased attention on EDI-related research projects, as researchers shared concerns about the lack of funding for ongoing projects. A speaker asked about how UCLA would respond to changes  to federally funded research projects and the defunding or cancellation of any EDI-related work. 
  • Academic Freedom: Discussions centered on the importance of protecting academic freedom and rights in the face of perceived federal overreach.
  • Public Perception of Higher Education: Concerns were expressed about declining public support for higher education and the need to improve its image. One speaker noted that the research UCLA produces should be showcased and communicated to the larger public.
  • Outreach: One speaker shared that UCLA should engage more actively with Republican lawmakers, the current federal administration, and the wider public.  
  • Support for Research: Speakers strongly emphasized the importance of supporting research and innovation at UCLA.
  • Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI): The value of diversity and inclusion within the academic community was highlighted. The audience also asked how UCLA will continue to show its commitment to its core values regarding inclusive excellence and academic freedom.
  • UCLA’s History and Legacy: Speakers expressed pride in UCLA’s history and its contributions to society.
  • Faculty Concerns: Faculty members voiced concerns about the impact of budget cuts and policy changes on their work.
  • Rebuilding Trust: Speakers commented on the need to rebuild trust between the administration and faculty, particularly after last spring’s protests. Dialogue across Difference was specifically discussed.
