Grappling with the Tragedy in Buffalo

Chancellor Block sent the following message to the UCLA Bruin Community.

Dear Bruin Community:

Yesterday we were left horrified by yet another hate-driven attack — this time at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, where a gunman who espoused white supremacist ideology shot 13 people, most of them Black.

Our hearts are heavy as we grapple with such appalling, racist violence. We offer our deepest condolences to the victims’ loved ones, and we hope for healing for those who were injured. While this incident was on the opposite end of the country, it feels close and personal for many in our community.

In recent years, we have seen too many racially motivated attacks targeting too many groups, each fueled by the corrosive beliefs of those who fear diversity and difference. At UCLA, we must always condemn such ideas, remaining true to our values of equity, diversity and inclusion. These values are foundational to a community where everyone belongs and is safe, and where all can thrive.

I know many of us are hurting from this most recent attack. Counseling services are available for students through UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services and employees through UCLA’s Staff and Faculty Counseling Center.

As we grapple with this tragic incident, let us remember that an antidote to hatred is our commitment to building a community based upon shared dignity and mutual respect.
