Message on Recent UC Incidents

Campus Climate

Chancellor Block addresses recent incidents of hate and intimidation on UC campuses.

UCLA is a very special place, a community of exceptional people representing many varied backgrounds and viewpoints. During the last few weeks, an increasing number of incidents involving symbols of hate and intimidation have taken place at UC campuses. I am appalled and saddened by these deplorable acts.

Deliberate, intolerant acts that demean and threaten the well-being of others have no place at UCLA or any university. They tear at the fabric of our community and lead to great personal pain. My heart goes out to the students at all of our campuses who have been affected.

As Chancellor, I am determined to respond vigorously and to do all that I can to prevent destructive behavior from occurring at UCLA. I have been engaged in constructive dialogue with students, community leaders, and others who share my commitment to ensuring that every student has an outstanding educational experience.

We also must work together to encourage an environment where free speech, civility and respect coexist — and none at the expense of the other. We must not allow the destructive behavior of a few to disrupt the productive engagement of many.
