Positioning UCLA for the Future

Chancellor Julio Frenk shared this message with faculty and staff.

Dear Colleagues:

As we continue to navigate a rapidly evolving higher education landscape, it is critical that we align our institutional leadership, resources and operations in ways that best support UCLA’s mission of teaching, research and service. In that spirit, I am writing to share an important step we are taking to improve efficiency, starting with my own team.

In my State of the Campus address, I shared that my office is consolidating key administrative functions to sharpen execution and reduce overhead. Two vice chancellor roles — finance and administration — will now be aligned under a single position reporting to me. This step strengthens our ability to connect strategy with operations and ensures that decisions move forward with focus and discipline. We will begin a national search immediately.

A new leader will oversee financial strategy, administrative operations, capital programs and infrastructure planning, and operational excellence. This new role will help ensure that our financial and operational infrastructure fully supports our academic priorities and commitment to excellence, and is part of a broader effort to advance our vision of One UCLA.

I want to express my appreciation to Vice Chancellor Michael Beck for his longstanding service to UCLA, as he has helped guide operational and administrative efforts during a period of significant change. He will be retiring at the end of this calendar year as we transition to this new leadership model.

I look forward to continuing this important work together in service of our mission.

We are One UCLA.

Julio Frenk
Chancellor
