Publication of UCLA’s Comprehensive Sustainability Plan

Campus ClimateCampus Update

Chancellor Block sent the following message to the UCLA Bruin Community.

Dear Bruin Community:

I write today — on Earth Day — to share UCLA’s inaugural Sustainability Plan, bringing together for the first time our campus’s many efforts to advance environmental health, social equity and economic vitality for our institution, community and region. I encourage you to view the sustainability plan launch video by clicking the image above.

UCLA and members of our campus have long been engaged in initiatives to promote sustainability, lessen the impact of climate change, and develop healthy and resilient communities. Our renowned faculty spearhead innovative research across the disciplines, helping us to better understand the challenges we face and to devise equitable solutions. Through the teaching we provide, we educate Bruins about how to be socially engaged and environmentally responsible citizens. And as an anchor institution in the diverse city of Los Angeles, we endeavor to model programs and policies on campus and in our community that can lead to broad and lasting change.

Our new sustainability plan covers the full range of sustainability initiatives at UCLA across academics, operations and community engagement. Originally shared in draft form earlier this year, it reflects insights and feedback gathered from over a thousand members of our community. The plan will be used across our campus as a roadmap for moving sustainability forward and tracking progress, as well as enhancing our knowledge of sustainability best practices and spreading awareness of how each one of us can be a more socially and environmentally responsible world citizen.

The challenge of developing a sustainable, healthy, resilient campus and world has never been more urgent. To address the issues ahead of us, we must all change how we live, work, play and connect. With the support and engagement of our whole community, UCLA can continue to serve a leadership role in operating in a socially and environmentally conscious way, protecting our ecosystems, preserving our natural resources, and contributing to global and societal health.

Sincerely,

  • Gene D. BlockChancellor
