State of the Campus This Morning

Chancellor Julio Frenk shared this message with the Bruin community.

Dear Bruin Community:

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our inaugural State of the Campus address this morning. I am deeply grateful to our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners whose dedication and sense of purpose continue to shape UCLA in profound ways. This morning provided an opportunity to reflect on our shared aspirations — to be a connective, impactful and exemplary university. I invite you to read the full text of the State of the Campus address on my website.

In my remarks, I highlighted the progress we have made together over the past year and on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for our university and for higher education more broadly. I spoke about our shared vision of One UCLA and the ways we are advancing that vision through initiatives that strengthen connection across our campus and around the world, expand the impact of our scholarly and creative work, and reinforce our responsibility to lead with boldness and purpose.

I also addressed the significant financial pressures confronting universities across the country and announced concrete steps UCLA is taking to strengthen our long-term resilience and align our resources with our core academic mission. Throughout these efforts, our guiding principle remains clear: to ensure that the resources entrusted to UCLA create the greatest possible value for society.

The address was also an opportunity to reaffirm what makes UCLA extraordinary — our people; our public mission; and our collective commitment to excellence, belonging and service. I offered some reflections on the refreshed True Bruin Values — Integrity, Excellence and Belonging — that will continue to guide our community.

I want to thank Adriana Galván, dean and vice provost of undergraduate education and a professor of psychology, who served as emcee for our gathering. I also want to thank the campus leaders who joined me in sharing their perspectives this morning: Naomi Hammonds, president of the Graduate Students Association; Professor Megan McEvoy, president of the Academic Senate; and Michael McCormack-Colón, president of the Staff Assembly.

The work ahead will require focus, collaboration and bold thinking, but I am confident in what we can accomplish together. I look forward to coming together again next year for our second State of the Campus.

We are One UCLA.
