Chancellor Block encourages the campus community to support relief efforts in the Philippines and highlights resources for students, staff and faculty whose families have been affected.

We have been deeply saddened by the devastating effects of Friday’s typhoon in the Philippines. Even as we continue to grasp the extent of the damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan, we send our deepest sympathy to the millions in the Philippines who were directly affected as well as to the members of the UCLA family with friends, colleagues and loved ones there.

At times like this, I am always heartened by the way in which the UCLA community rallies to assist those in need. I encourage you to contribute to relief efforts through the American Red Cross or another organization of your choice, and through your ongoing research and outreach initiatives.

Students who are affected by this tragedy should know that resident advisors, resident directors and the Office of the Dean of Students can provide information about campus support services, including Counseling and Psychological Services, where counselors are available 24 hours a day; and that the Loan Services Office offers crisis-related emergency loans for those who qualify.

Health Sciences faculty and staff will receive information about resources and relevant policies from UCLA Health System human resources; for all other faculty and staff, our Campus Human Resources website offers information about counseling and other resources as well as policies on emergency leave for those whose families are affected.
