Uniting Against Hatred
Chancellor Block and Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley shared the following message with the UCLA campus community.
Dear Bruin Community,
Last week, the Asian American Studies Center at UCLA received a violent, racist and hate–filled flyer that referenced a “non-violent rally” at an unspecified time and location on campus tomorrow. We build the Bruin community through respecting and honoring people of all backgrounds and treating each other with dignity. We reject and condemn the flyer’s message of white supremacy, ethnic hostility and identity-based hatred.Â
We have investigated this incident and do not see a need to modify campus plans at this time. At the same time, additional Community Program/Security Officers and UCPD officers will be monitoring campus tomorrow out of an abundance of caution.
We also acknowledge how this message, coupled with other recent events, may cause deep distress to many in our community. For Bruins seeking support, counseling services are available for students through UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services and employees through UCLA’s Staff and Faculty Counseling Center. Anyone who experiences discrimination and/or harassment in our community should report it to our Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion’s Civil Rights Office.
While there is no additional evidence of a rally on campus directly related to the hate-filled flyer, we know that some groups may separately be planning events on campus tomorrow to promote a range of different opinions on various topics. We know the Bruin community is large and some of these views may generate strong reactions, either in support or opposition. While we can always respect differing opinions, we will always reject hatred. While some may try to conflate the two, an engaged, educated community can always tell the difference.
Our shared values of mutual respect, equity, diversity and inclusion will always guide our actions. We must always be respectful of one another, even when we disagree, but must always stand united against hatred.
Sincerely,
