Dear Students:
As we all work to adapt to the challenges of this new environment, we want to make certain UCLA is providing the resources you need to be successful and remain connected to the Bruin community. As leaders at UCLA, we understand that many of your needs and priorities have shifted dramatically over the past month. Leaders in the chancellor’s office and student government alike are working hard to support you.
Answers to many of your questions and helpful information from campus units is available on UCLA’s COVID-19 websiteand Bruins Safe Online, which are updated regularly. The Undergraduate Students Association Council (USAC) is engaged and coordinating closely with students, the chancellor’s office and other UCLA leadership to ensure that your voices are heard and that we are responsive to all of your needs.
We also ask you to ensure your interests are represented in student government, particularly at this unprecedented time. As we approach USAC elections, which run from May 4 at 8 a.m. to May 8 at 1 p.m., we encourage each of you to take these steps:
- Learn about the issues. This election has several important measures, including referenda about which you will want to be informed.
- Engage with the candidates by viewing their qualifications and goals, as well as their video responses on a virtual Meet the Candidates platform.
- Submit questions for the April 30 debate through the Candidate/Referenda Debate Question Submission Form.
- Tune in to the debate on April 30 at 6 p.m.
- Exercise your right and responsibility to vote.
Please remember that the USAC officials you choose can have a real impact on your UCLA experience. They will represent your interests in the coming year, partnering closely with other UCLA leaders in the chancellor’s office and the Academic Senate. Most recently, USAC helped communicate students’ views on commencement ceremonies and spring quarter grading. We will be working closely with campus leadership on these and many other issues going forward, including making certain that our online learning environments are safe and protected for all students. As always, anyone who experiences bias, should report the incident to the Office of the Dean of Students. More information about the election process, the offices and candidates is available at the Undergraduate Students Association Elections Board page.
As much as times like these can test us, they also remind us that everyone can make a difference and have a real impact on our shared future. Even as we face change and uncertainty, we must also recognize opportunity. All of us are Bruins because of our shared commitment to our community.
Let’s all do our part so that we live up to our True Bruin values.
Sincerely,
Gene D. Block
Chancellor
Robert B. Watson
