Chancellor Block addressed Ph.D. candidates at UCLA’s Graduate Division Doctoral Hooding ceremony at Royce Hall.

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block delivers the call to order at the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony at Royce Hall on June 15, 2017.

“Obtaining a Ph.D. is, in many ways, an extraordinary journey. It often takes a level of focus and sustained effort that can be isolating, stressful and frankly discouraging,” said Chancellor Block. “However, in the midst of discouragement, there were those wonderful insights, a pathway forward — perhaps a successful experiment — that produced the highest of highs. In the end, you have achieved something truly extraordinary. With talent, persistence and yes, some luck.”

Also in attendance were Jayathi Murthy, dean of UCLA Engineering and Laura E. Gómez, interim dean of UCLA College Division of Social Sciences.
